The smart play in that situation is to play the opposition parties against each other. Instead the Conservatives kicked them all in the nuts simultaneously, and now wonder why the other parties suddenly found enough common ground to hijack the government.
It's either hilarious or tragic. I lean towards hilarious because the Prime Minister can be a spiteful little wanker, and now he has his reward.

That only took him two months to go from being able to successfully manage a minority government and turn the opposition leader into a dead duck, to the point where he might end up somewhere below Joe Clark in the history books.
At least Joe lost his PM job to Trudeau, who won a majority government. Harper will lose to Dion - someone who had already lost the confidence of his party, and tendered his resignation as leader.
What a colossal screwup. I read on CBC that this new coalition, if it takes power, will have "an economic advisory panel of experts that would include Paul Martin, John Manley, Frank McKenna and Roy Romanow."
Yeah. Roy Romanow. That is a great way to inspire confidence in the West. At least Broadbent won't be on it, but I don't have much hope for the economy if this coalition happens.
The only upside to this is that in their grab for power, I don't think the Liberals and NDP have really thought through the impacts of depending on the Bloc. I wouldn't vote for a party who had gotten in bed (politically at least) with Gilles Duceppe. Thank goodness the Greens were not involved, so I still have a safe protest vote. I think the NDP and Liberals will bleed votes out west, not sure about Ontario and the east.[ Parent ]

The Bloc are jerks, but they're also realists, they'll play along as long as Quebec gets a big slice of the pie.
Besides, you could hardly pandered more to Quebec then Harper already has, how much money has he spent there, and he passed that "nation" thing.[ Parent ]

If the Greens could come off sounding like statesman on this rather than opportunists, and strike a chord that resounds with the typical left-leaning voter, they could do really well. [ Parent ]
Unfortunately, the Greens don't exactly stand out from the crowd on freedom and privacy issues either. There are no parties that I can vote for without some reservations.
The infighting of a mixed Liberal / NDP cabinet will certainly be a spectacle to behold. [ Parent ]
While I am not convinced of government's ability to mitigate the financial crisis, I am confident that the NDP could always make a bad economic situation worse.[ Parent ]
The Liberal finance minister will be kept busy pandering to the other two parties to keep their support, and they will be unable to deliver solid financial performance.
Don't forget, Harper only ever needed support from one other opposition party to pass bills. Dion will need the combined support of the two greediest ones, who both have a tenuous grasp on reality at best.[ Parent ]
